How will the Ofcom 0870 changes affect my business?

Undoubtedly the proposed changes for 0870 numbering will attract the attention of all Marketing, Telecoms & I.T. Managers, as most businesses will need to carry out a full review of their Non-Geographical Numbering, before deciding on the best way forward.

You have two options:

1. Keep your existing 0870 numbers and pay a charge per minute to receive calls, plus additional charges for any other network based services (i.e. call recording, intelligent routing etc).

2. Introduce new Contact Numbers (and possibly retain/increase your revenue share)

Why will I be charged a 'per minute' rate to continue using my 0870 numbers?

By reducing the cost of calling these numbers, Ofcom has effectively ended revenue sharing on 0870. The 'per minute' rate which network operators are currently paid for the traffic they receive on these numbers, which is normally shared with the end user, will be reduced dramatically. Although the switching and delivery costs will be covered by a small rebate, there will be no revenue left for network operators to share with their customers. Therefore, in order to continue providing service on these numbers, and maintain a profit, network operators will be left with no choice but to apply a 'per minute' charge if you continue to use this type of number.

What are the alternatives to 0870?

If you decide to move away from 0870 then you have a number of options, as listed below:

0800 - Freephone
0845 - Local Rate
0844 - upto 5 ppm (paying revenue share)
0871 - upto 10 ppm (paying revenue share)
01/02 - Standard Geographic

Your decision may well be based on whether you rely on any network based services, such as call recording, call queuing, intelligent routing etc.

With 0844/0871 numbering Syntec can provide these network based services as well as pay you a revenue share.

If you decide to move to Syntec 0800, 0845 or Geographic numbers there is still no need for you to invest in your own equipment in order to enjoy these facilites. We can apply these services to those numbers as well, provide you with the online/real-time tools that you need to control them and charge you a nominal 'per minute' rate.
